Energy Ratings

What is Energy Efficiency?

Energy efficiency is big news in today’s society and there is increasing pressure on homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient.

Windows are a major source of energy and heat loss resulting in negative effects for both your budget and the environment.

Why should windows be officially energy rated?

  • As part of the Kyoto Protocol agreement initiate by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the government is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by saving energy - this will have a direct effect on homeowners.
  • Government policy will require all buildings offered for sale or rent to be energy rated.

How can you help?

By installing Energy Rated Windows you will:
  • Reduce the amount of fuel needed to heat your home
  • Save money on your fuel bills
  • Reduce the amount of energy wasted in the home
  • Help protect the environment

Calculating  Window Energy ratings

As well as calculating the overall accurate ‘U’ value for a specification and design of window (frame and gaskets, as well as the double glazed unit), Window Energy Rating also takes into account the significant benefit to be derived from solar gain along with the heat lost through air infiltration.

The rating is carried out by computer simulation of the product to European standards and the use of climate data and building models. This gives a single number that can be used to compare the energy performance of a window simply and quickly.

A - G Scale

Windows are rated using the familiar A to G scale on the basis of their total energy efficiency, where an A-rated window is more energy efficient than a G-rated window. Consumers and specifiers can quickly and easily choose the most suitable window for their needs.

The window energy rating label is similar to the EU label used on fridges, washing machines and light bulbs.
